Who said all video tripods need to be heavy, twin-truss behemoths? Those bigger tripods can be impractical where space is cramped or when you need to carry them for longer distances. Plus, they’re often overkill—for many mirrorless rigs, a more nimble setup is ideal. The Key Grip Video Tripod Kit provides the perfect balance of features and portability in a compact kit that feels great to use and won’t weigh you down.
The head: smooth and precise, with a unique control handle
The included two-way head provides separate pan and tilt adjustments—both with etched scales for when precision is needed—and features a large removable control handle. This comfortable handle is extendable and locks in place with a twist. Unscrew the aluminum cap from the end of the Key Grip handle’s grip to reveal a set of hex keys! Two 4mm hex keys can be used together to adjust the bolts on a tripod leg or individually to secure the included quick release plate to a camera or video rig. The included 2.5mm hex key can be used to adjust the monopod’s grub screw which keeps the head securely attached. The head’s tilt movement has tension adjustment for smooth, controlled motions, and silver touch points help quickly identify the control knobs.
This head comes with the excellent 3398 Dovetail (arca-type) Quick Release Plate. This QR plate includes ¼”-20 and 3/8”-16 mounting bolts, both of which can be installed using either a flathead screwdriver or one of the two 4mm hex keys contained in the Key Grip’s handle. The plate also has a removable spring-loaded anti-twist pin. The QR plate is over 101mm long, making it easy to properly balance a camera rig. A scale on the QR platform makes it easy to quickly repeat any given setup. The QR platform is also repositionable and can be changed from front-to-back to a side-to-side sliding direction! This is particularly useful for mounting a camera with a cage or L-bracket attached. The plate uses a safety bolt design to prevent a camera from accidentally sliding off the head’s platform, and its Dovetail connection is compatible with a wide variety of plates and accessories from ProMaster and other brands.
The legs: ultra-compact design with an integrated leveling base
The Key Grip’s 4-section legs are remarkably compact due to a column-less design and quick to deploy with twist locks. Each leg has 3 angle positions which can be independently adjusted, and the kit can achieve a ground-level setup of just over 9” tall! An integrated 55mm leveling base with a built-in bullseye level provides 15 degrees of adjustment, making it quick and easy to level your equipment without needing to adjust the tripod legs. The tripod’s collar features a removable weight hook for added stability and two threaded accessory ports with stainless-steel sleeves—one with a 3/8”-16 port and one with a ¼”-20 connection. These serve as connection points for a flex arm, articulating arm, and other accessories.
Two types of feet are included with the Key Grip. The tripod comes with 50mm self-leveling feet installed. These feet achieve excellent stability and help dampen vibrations. They can be removed using one of the 4mm hex keys stored in the Key Grip handle. A set of standard tripod feet are also included, which can be a better option on rough or uneven terrain.
Soft silicone on the tripod leg, handle, and twist locks provides a grip that is both comfortable and secure, and both the tripod and head are rated for use at -4°F / -20° C so they won’t let you down in the cold. With a load capacity of 6.6 lbs, the Key Grip Video Tripod Kit is ideal for a mirrorless video rig and works great for still photos too. Many telephoto lenses with Dovetail style (arca-compatible) tripod collars work extremely well with the Key Grip head in achieving excellent tracking for wildlife or sports. Beyond video and photo, it’s also a terrific choice for birding—two-way heads are ideal for spotting scopes and the compact, lightweight tripod won’t weigh you down when trekking outdoors.
